The first time round I stayed at Dongfang Binguan from 1981 to 1983 for almost two years. At that time it was basically the only top-class (!) hotel in Guangzhou. During the last five years I returned to Dongfang several times and enjoyed the stay there. Of course, the hotel is now fully refurbished and a good place to stay. Service is excellent. Breakfast is ok, could offer a bit more variety. Restaurants offer excellent food,

I only booked a Deluxe Business Room (second from the lowest) at a reasonable, downtown Guangzhou rate. Free wifi in the rooms and lobby is sweet, Just a reminder, first generation iPads always have problems in China. I always bring an older laptop with me. I digress. I usually only book 1 night at any hotel I have not been to before, and then add additional nights. Have stayed in numerous 4 and 5 star hotels in Guangzhou and I have to say that this is a keeper. I booked a second, third, and am now booking a fourth night. Clean and large. As mentioned by another room it was bizarre that there was no clock (but the guest book says you can get one delivered). No KTV in hotel for those who care. I do, so only drawback to hotel. Found it clean. The beautiful outside lounge is expensive for food (avoid) but reasonable with drink prices. Avoid the Four Seasons Restaurant (no, it is not related to the awesome, Four Seasons hotel chain; don't get fooled into thinking it is like me) next door in the China (Marriott) Hotel - added an entree on the bill, food were small portions, taste nothing special, wish I had gone to the McDonalds less than 25 meters away for more flavorful food at 1/7 the price (beautiful interior though).

Was reluctant to stay here as a result of Tripadvisor reviews. The Hotel was good, the room was great, we where upgraded to a business room. Had our own lounge and seperate bedroom. Wireless throughout hotel a massive bonus. Breakfast very average, catered more for the locals. We ended up at Starbucks each morning which was next door, that was great. Good location close to many nice restaurants and easy for Taxi's to find. Beds are hard, though I like it this way as lived in China for 5 years. Will stay here again on my next visit.
